Ghost Tide

I made this fine art long exposure photograph of Towradgi Point rock pools, Illawarra NSW, captured at sunset during king tides on 16th January 2018.

There are photographs you take from a safe distance, and there are photographs you earn. Ghost Tide was shot standing on the slippery terrace at Towradgi Point as king tides surged around the tripod legs — water gushing past, gear soaked in salty mist, the ocean making its intentions clear. I remember the sand all through my hair after this shoot and the hours cleaning my gear.

What the long exposure captured in those conditions is something the eye alone cannot hold — waves reduced to silk, water streaking across ancient rock in ghostly trails, the whole scene wrapped in a moody, overcast stillness that belies the chaos of the moment. The sunset offered no warmth that evening, only a steamy, atmospheric glow that turned the rock pools into something between a landscape and a dream.

Towradgi Point is a place the Illawarra keeps to itself. Ghost Tide is a reminder of what patience, commitment, and a willingness to get your feet wet can produce.

Print Options
Available as an Open Edition fine art print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm or Metallic Pearl, printed with archival pigment inks for exceptional longevity and colour accuracy. Every print is expertly crafted locally in the Illawarra.

Framing
Framed prints are presented with a double mat and UV-protective acrylic glazing in your choice of Black, White, or Oak timber frame. Framed canvas and Metallic Float Framed options are available in the same frame colours, with Dark Oak also available for the float frame. 

About the Framing

All frames are crafted from premium timber mouldings in your choice of Black, White, or Oak finish, with Dark Oak available for the Metallic Float Framed option. Frames up to 24×36” use a 30mm profile; the 40×60” format steps up to a 40mm profile to suit the scale of the work.

Framed Prints (8×12” to 24×36”) are mounted behind a double mat with a 6cm border all around — an inner and outer mat board that creates depth and draws the eye into the image — and finished with UV-protective acrylic glazing to guard against fading and dust.

Framed Prints (40×60”) are presented without a mat — the print extends to the frame edge with a spacer for depth, finished with UV-protective acrylic glazing. Frame profile: 40mm.

Framed Canvas prints are float mounted within the frame with a deliberate gap between the canvas edge and the frame rebate, giving the work a contemporary gallery feel. No glazing is used, preserving the natural texture of the canvas surface.

Metallic Float Framed prints are similarly float mounted, allowing the distinctive lustre and edge of the Metallic Pearl substrate to remain fully visible. No glazing required — the metallic surface is its own statement.
